THE LAWS KEEP CHANGING!

EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2015

LEARNER PERMIT: SUPERVISED DRIVING ONLY:

THE MINIMUM AGE FOR ENROLLING IN DRIVER’S ED AND OBTAINING A DRIVER EDUCATION LEARNER PERMIT IS 15 YEARS .  STUDENTS MAY NOT BEGIN CLASSROOM OR BEHIND-THE-WHEEL TRAINING BEFORE THIS TIME.  A WRITTEN EXAM IS REQUIRED TO OBTAIN A DRIVER EDUCATION LEARNER PERMIT.  TEENS WHO DO NOT TAKE DRIVER’S ED MAY NOT OBTAIN A LEARNER PERMIT UNTIL AGE 16.  A WRITTEN EXAM IS REQUIRED TO OBTAIN A LEARNER PERMIT WITH OR WITHOUT DRIVER’S EDUCATION.

ALL PERSONS, REGARDLESS OF AGE AND WHETHER OR NOT DRIVER’S ED IS TAKEN, MUST HAVE HELD A LEARNER PERMIT FOR 180 DAYS PRIOR TO LICENSING.

50 HOURS OF SUPERVISED PRACTICE DRIVING WITH A LICENSED INSTRUCTOR OR A LICENSED DRIVER AT LEAST 25 YEARS OLD IS REQUIRED PRIOR TO LICENSING.

PROBATIONARY LICENSE: UNSUPERVISED DRiVING/ RESTRICTIONS:

LICENSES ISSUED PRIOR TO AGE 18 ARE CONSIDERED PROBATIONARY, AND THE FOLLOWING RULES APPLY:

THE MINIMUM AGE FOR OBTAINING A PROBATIONARY LICENSE IS 16 YEARS AND 90 DAYS.  TEENS WHO DO NOT TAKE DRIVER’S ED MAY NOT OBTAIN A PROBATIONARY LICENSE UNTIL 16 YEARS AND 180 DAYS.

TEENS MAY NOT OPERATE A MOTOR VEHICLE WHILE USING A TELECOMMUNICATION DEVICE OF ANY SORT; THIS INCLUDES TEXTING OR TALKING, EVEN WITH HANDS-FREE OR BLUE TOOTH.

FOR THE FIRST 180 DAYS OF LICENSING, TEENS MAY NOT DRIVE BETWEEN 10 PM AND 5 AM.  AFTER THE FIRST 180 DAYS, TEENS MAY NOT DRIVE BETWEEN 11 PM AND 5 AM ON WEEKDAYS AND BETWEEN 1 AM AND 5 AM ON WEEKENDS.  EXCEPTIONS TO THIS WOULD BE FOR SCHOOL, WORK, OR RELIGIOUS EVENTS, OR WHEN ACCOMPANIED BY A LICENSED DRIVER 25 OR OLDER.

TEENS MAY DRIVE ALONE WITH A PROBATIONARY DRIVER’S LICENSE.

TEENS MAY NOT DRIVE WITH ANY PASSENGERS FOR 180 DAYS AFTER OBTAINING A PROBATIONARY DRIVER’S LICENSE UNLESS ONE OF THE FOLLOWING INDIVIDUALS IS PRESENT IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT:

- PARENT, GUARDIAN, OR STEP-PARENT WHO IS 21 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER

- AN INDIVIDUAL WHO IS 25 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER WHO HAS A VALID LICENSE

- CERTIFIED DRIVING INSTRUCTOR

*TEENS MAY DRIVE WITH SIBLINGS, SPOUSES, OR HIS/HER OWN CHILDREN
