LAWS FOR NEW DRIVERS

OBTAINING A LEARNER PERMIT AND TAKING DRIVER’S ED

Students can enroll in Driver’s Ed and obtain a driver education learner permit at 15 years old. A written exam is required to obtain the driver education learner permit, but don’t worry. We will spend the first 3 days of class going over this information thoroughly.

The learner permit is not required to attend classroom training, but it is required before beginning behind-the-wheel training.

Teens who don’t take Driver’s Ed must wait until age 16 to obtain the learner permit.

When practicing with a learner permit, students who are under age 18 may practice driving with any licensed relative 25 or older. Students who are 18 or older may practice driving with any licensed driver 25 or older.

PROBATIONARY DRIVER’S LICENSE

May be obtained at 16 years and 90 days of age if the applicant has taken Driver’s Ed (16 years and 270 days of age without Driver’s Ed).

All new drivers, regardless of age or Driver’s Ed, MUST hold an Indiana Learner Permit for 180 before being eligible to get a driver’s license.

All new drivers MUST also complete 50 hours of supervised practice driving with either a licensed instructor or eligible supervising passenger.

PROBATIONARY DRIVER RESTRICTIONS A driver’s license issued to someone under age 21 is considered probationary and special restrictions apply.

No texting, reading a text, or talking on a phone while driving. This includes Bluetooth or hands-free technology.

No passengers other than siblings, children or spouses are allowed for the first 180 days. Probationary drivers MAY drive alone during the first 180 days.

No driving between 10 PM and 5 AM, except for school, work, or religious activities for the first 180 days.
